Light Waves and Color
Polarization and Polaroid Filter Gallery
The Polarization and Polaroid Filter Gallery features photos that illustrate the concepts associated with light polarization and the use of Polaroid filters to reduce glare, to brighten skies, and to analyze the stress patterns in thermo molded plastics. This gallery coordinates with the Polarization page of Lesson 1 of the Light Waves and Color chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.
Color Gallery
The Color Gallery features photos of colored pencils and chalk, light spectra, autumn colors, scanning electron micrographs of the retina, and more. Photos and accompanying descriptions tell the fascinating story of how color and color vision is achieved. This gallery coordinates with Lesson 2 of the Light Waves and Color chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.
Light Interference Gallery
The Light Interference Gallery features Bphotos of diffraction patterns, two point source interference patterns and thin film interference patterns. Photos and accompanying descriptions focus on the phenomenon of light interference and the remarkable results that it produces. This gallery coordinates mostly with Lesson 3 of the Light Waves and Color chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 1: How Do We Know Light Behaves as a Wave?
Lesson 1 discusses the wavelike behaviors of light. An effort is made to associate the behavior of light reflection, refraction, diffraction, two-point source interference, thin film interference, and polarization with wave-like behavior. Items in the group's pool include photos of Polaroid filters, the use of filters to analyze stress patterns in molded plastics, birefringence caused by calcite crystals, thin film interference patterns, Newton rings, diffraction patterns, and much more. Photos complement many of the discussions from Lesson 1 of the Light Waves and Color chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 2: Color and Vision
Lesson 2 emphasizes how simple principles of color addition and subtraction can be used to explain the world of color. Items in the group's pool include photos of paint pigments, colored filters, colored shadows, harvest moons, and much more. Photos complement many of the discussions from Lesson 2 of the Light Waves and Color chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 3: Mathematics of Two-Point Source Interference
Lesson 3 discusses the development of Young's equation and its use to determine the wavelength of light. Items in the group's pool include diagrams of diffraction and two-point source interference patterns and photos of ripple tank experiments, interference patterns on still water, and much more. Photos complement many of the discussions from Lesson 3 of the Light Waves and Color chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.
