A measurement is reliant upon a system of units. The metric system provides a set of base units for making measurements of a variety of quantities. Each base unit can be further modified by the use of Greek prefixes. Knowledge of the connection between a unit (including its abbreviation) and the quantity it is used for is essential in a quantitative science course.
