Physics Classroom is making strides to make our site accessible to everyone. Our site contains 6 navigation areas. The Primary, Secondary, and Page Level navigations have a screen reader version of their nav structure that allows using the left and right keys to navigate sibling navigation items, and up or down keys to navigate parent or child navigation items. The others can be navigated using tabs. The Primary Navigation handles the first 2 levels of site pages. The Secondary (which is not always available) handles the 3rd and 4th level of structure. The Page level navigation allows you to navigate the current page's headings quickly. The Header Navigation contains the Light/Dark Mode toggle, Search, Notifications and account login. The Breadcrumb Navigation contains the breadcrumb of the current page. If the current page has a breadcrumb, you can get to it by skipping to the content and tabbing in reverse (shift plus tab). The Footer Navigation contains links such as Privacy, Contact, about and terms. Some resources contain an Audio Player that can be activated by holding down the T key for 3 seconds, and then using K to pause and resume. While not every area of Physics Classroom is usable purely from keyboard and screen reader, we are committed to continue work on making this possible. Mission KG9 Graphs and Oil Drop Diagrams

 The Question

Match the oil drop representation below to the appropriate letter for a velocity-time graph. It is known that the object is moving toward the left (where leftward is the negative direction).

Velocity-Time Graphs:
Velocity versus time graphs represent changes that occur in an object's velocity with respect to time. The slope of the line is the acceleration (change in velocity divided by the change in time) of the object.

 Dig that Diagram

The oil drop pattern uses dots to represent the location of the car after a certain interval of time - perhaps after every 1-second interval in time. An inspection of the location of each dot relative to the previous dots allows you to determine if the distance traveled in the most recent second is increasing, decreasing or staying the same. You can decide what type of motion is involved by observing how the distance traveled in each consecutive second is changing.

 Think About It

It should be clear from the oil drop pattern that the object is moving with a changing velocity. The object changes its speed from a low velocity (slow) to a large velocity (fast). The velocity is negative the entire time. You must match this motion with the appropriate velocity-time plot.
 
Since the velocity is negative, you will need to pick a line that is in the negative region of the graph (above the time axis). Since there is an acceleration (that is, the velocity is changing), you will need to pick a line with a slope (see Know the Law section). Since the object is moving from slow to fast, you will need to pick a line which slopes downward from a nearly 0 velocity to a large negative velocity.
