Dots and Graphs - Exercise
The Dots and Graphs Concept Builder is comprised of 48 questions. The questions are divided into 12 different question groups. Questions in the same group are rather similar to one another; they each involve the same type of motion and/or graphs. For instance, each question in a Question Group may be describing three objects moving at a constant speed, all in the same direction; each question in a different Question Group might describe three objects moving at a constant speed, but two in one direction and the third in the opposite direction. The Concept Builder is coded to select at random a question from each Question Group until a student is successful with that group of questions.
There are three Activities which the student can complete in this Concept Builder. Those three activities are described as follows:
- Position-Time Graphs: Question Groups 1-6; match each of three motions to a position-time graph chosen from among a set of six options.
- Velocity-Time Graphs: Question Groups 7-12; match each of three motions to a velocity-time graph chosen from among a set of six options.
- Mixed Graph Types: Question Groups 1-12; includes all Question Groups in the first two activities; questions are randomly selected from the position-time groups and the velocity-time groups in no particular order.
The questions from each group are shown below. Teachers are encouraged to view the questions in order to judge which activities are most appropriate for their classes. One activity does not depend upon completion of another activity. The Mixed Graph Types activity is certainly the most difficult due to both the number of questions and the mixing of the two graph types. We recommend that teachers try the activity themselves in order to get
a feel for the type of decision-making and the difficulty of the decision-making that is required of students who do the activity.
The Physics Classroom grants teachers and other users the right to print these questions for private use. Users are also granted the right to copy the text and modify it for their own use. However, this document should not be uploaded to other servers for distribution to and/or display by others. The Physics Classroom website should remain the only website or server from which the document is distributed or displayed. We also provide a PDF that teachers can use under the same conditions. We have included a link to the PDF near the bottom of this page.
