Matching Pairs: Wave Characteristics - Questions

The Matching Pairs: Wave Characteristics Concept Builder is comprised of five different Matching Pairs activities. Each Matching Pair activity requires that the student make a match between two terms or statements. Eight statements are displayed on the screen regarding four different wave quantities. Students must analyze the statement and match them up in pairs. Once all four pairs are correctly matched, the trophy for that difficulty level is earned and displayed. If a student makes an incorrect match, they must start over from the beginning with the same set of 8 statements organized in a different order on the Matching Pairs grid.

There are five different Matching Pair activities in this Concept Builder. Those five activities are described as follows:

  • Activity 1 - Definitions: Students match the name of a wave quantity to a formal definition of that quantity.
  • Activity 2 - Conceptual Meaning: Students match the name of a wave quantity to a conceptual statement that describes the quantity.
  • Activity 3 - Mathematical Meaning: Students match the name of a wave quantity to a mathematical statement that describes the quantity.
  • Activity 4 - Units: Students match the name of a wave quantity to a unit of expression for that quantity.
  • Activity 5 - Symbols: Students match the name of a wave quantity to the symbol used to represent it.

The terms used in each activity are displayed below. Teachers are encouraged to view the activities in order to judge which activities are most appropriate for their classes.

Matching Pairs: Wave Characteristics

Activity 1  Definitions

This activity presents learners with 8 different terms that must be matched by meaning. Learners tap on the terms to select them and then tap on the Check Match button. The order of the terms is randomized. A mis-matched pair restarts the game and re-randomizes the order of the terms. The terms are ...

The distance traveled by a point on the wave per unit of time.
Amplitude
The number of back and forth cycles per second.
Speed
Distance from rest position to a crest position.
Frequency
Wavelength
Distance from a crest to the next adjacent crest.

Activity 2.  Conceptual Meaning
This activity presents learners with 8 different terms that must be matched; four are the names of wave quantities and four are conceptual statements. Learners tap on the terms to select them and then tap on the Check Match button. The order of the terms is randomized. A mis-matched pair restarts the game and re-randomizes the order of the terms. Learners tap on the terms to select them and then tap on the Check Match button. The order of the terms is randomized. A mis-matched pair restarts the game and re-randomizes the order of the terms. The terms are ...

The maximum distance that a point on the medium is displaced from rest.
Period
Amplitude
The distance a point on the wave travels divided by the time of travel.
The number of cycles divided by the time for those cycles to occur.
Speed
The time divided by the number of cycles of vibration occurring during that time.

Activity 4   Units

This activity presents learners with 8 different terms that must be matched; four are the names of wave quantities and four are common units of expression. Learners tap on the terms to select them and then tap on the Check Match button. The order of the terms is randomized. A mis-matched pair restarts the gameand re-randomizes the order of the terms.
