Physics Classroom is making strides to make our site accessible to everyone. Our site contains 6 navigation areas. The Primary, Secondary, and Page Level navigations have a screen reader version of their nav structure that allows using the left and right keys to navigate sibling navigation items, and up or down keys to navigate parent or child navigation items. The others can be navigated using tabs. The Primary Navigation handles the first 2 levels of site pages. The Secondary (which is not always available) handles the 3rd and 4th level of structure. The Page level navigation allows you to navigate the current page's headings quickly. The Header Navigation contains the Light/Dark Mode toggle, Search, Notifications and account login. The Breadcrumb Navigation contains the breadcrumb of the current page. If the current page has a breadcrumb, you can get to it by skipping to the content and tabbing in reverse (shift plus tab). The Footer Navigation contains links such as Privacy, Contact, about and terms. Some resources contain an Audio Player that can be activated by holding down the T key for 3 seconds, and then using K to pause and resume. While not every area of Physics Classroom is usable purely from keyboard and screen reader, we are committed to continue work on making this possible. If you have questions or need additional help, please use this link to contact us.

Minds On - Work and Energy

The Work and Energy Minds-On module consists of various missions (assignments) that address such topics as work, power, kinetic and potential energy, and the relationship between the mechanical energy of an object and the work done upon or by it. The missions and the corresponding objectives are listed below. Tap a mission's name to begin.

Activities

Mission WE1 Work

Mission WE1 pertains to the concept, the meaning, and the mathematics of work. You should be able to recognize examples and non-examples of work and distinguish between positive and negative work. The mission consists of 39 questions organized into 10 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE10 Work-Energy Analysis

Mission WE10 focuses on the mathematical relationships between the work done by non-conservative forces and the kinetic and potential energies of an object. Energy formulas will have to be used to calculate such quantities as work, kinetic energy, potential energy, speed, and height. The mission consists of 16 questions organized into 8 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcome for this mission is ...

Mission WE2 Power

Mission WE2 pertains to the concept of mechanical power. You should know the definition of power, the unit for power, the meaning of a rate quantity, the mathematics of power, and the distinction between power and work. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE3 Kinetic and Potential Energy

Mission WE3 focuses on the contrasting meaning of kinetic energy and potential energy. You should be able to disinguish between the two modes of energy and be able to recognize the presence of either form and the manner in which it changes. The mission consists of 40 questions organized into 10 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE4 Mechanical Energy

Mission WE4 pertains to the concept of mechanical energy and its relationship to kinetic and potential energy. The mission consists of 36 questions organized into 9 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE5 Conservative and Non-Conservative Forces

Mission WE5 pertains to the concepts of conservative and non-conservative forces and the effect such forces have upon the total mechanical energy when they are doing work. The mission consists of 40 questions organized into 10 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE6 Energy Bar Charts

Mission WE6 focuses on the use of work-energy bar charts to describe the energy changes that are occuring for an object from the initial state to the final state of motion. The mission consists of 36 questions organized into 9 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcome for this mission is ...

Mission WE7 Mechanical Energy Conservation

Mission WE7 pertains to situations in which the mechanical energy of an object is conserved. You should understand the conditions under which mechanical energy is and is not conserved and apply conservation principles to such situations. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE8 Energy Analysis

Mission WE8 requires that you use energy relationships and formulas to determine the kinetic and potential energies of an object at varying locations and to compute speeds and heights at such locations. The mission consists of 16 questions organized into 8 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...

Mission WE9 Work and Energy Conversions

Mission WE9 focuses on situations in which the mechanical energy of an object is transformed into non-mechanical energy (or vice versa). You should know the conditions under which such energy transformations occur. The mission consists of 36 questions organized into 9 Question Groups. You must answer one question from each Question Group to complete the mission. The learning outcomes for this mission are ...
