Objectives - Light and Color

The Minds On Physics program consists of 15 modules. Each module covers a different topic and consists of a varying number of assignments. Every assignment addresses one or two objectives. The objectives for the Light and Color module are listed below.

• Assignment 1:
  • The student should be able to recognize the characteristics of an electromagnetic wave.
  • The student should be able to recognize the ordering of the electromagnetic and visible light spectrum in terms of both frequency and wavelength.
• Assignment 2:
  • The student should be able to distinguish between polarized and unpolarized light.
  • The student should be able to predict the effect of a Polaroid filter or combination of filters upon the vibrational habits of light.
• Assignment 3:
  • The student should be able to explain the meaning of a primary light color and identify the three primary colors of light.
  • The student should be able to predict the result of mixing primary colors of light.
• Assignment 4:
  • The student should be able to explain the significance of complementary colors of light and identify sets of complementary colors.
  • The student should be able to use complementary colors and principles of color subtraction to explain the appearance of an object when viewed under white light.
• Assignment 5:
  • The student should be able to use color subtraction principles to predict the appearance of an object when viewed under different colors of light.
  • The student should be able to use the principles of color subtraction to predict the colors of light which could be and must be illuminating an object if its appearance is known.
• Assignment 6:
  • The student should be able to identify the primary pigments and explain their significance in determining the color which an object will appear.
  • The student should be able to predict the result of mixing primary pigments.
• Assignment 7:
  • The student should be able to predict the color of an object if the pigments imparted to it and the color of light with which it is illuminated are known.
  • The student should be able to identify the pigments imparted to an object if its appearance under different colored lights is known.
• Assignment 8:
  • The student should be able to predict the effect which filters have on the appearance (color) of an object of various colors when viewed through the filter.
• Assignment 9:
  • The student should be able to use the principles of color addition and subtraction to predict and explain the color of shadows when a combination of light colors are used to create them.
