Chemistry: Nuclear Chemistry


We have 8 problem sets planned for the topic of nuclear chemistry. These problem sets focus on balancing nuclear chemistry, half-life and decay problems, radioactive dating, and mass defect and binding energy problems. Problems will range in difficulty with the easier problems being concentrated in the earlier sets.

Problem Set NC1: Balancing Nuclear Equations 1
Given an incomplete nuclear equation, determine the atomic number, mass number and symbol of the missing isotope or particle. Includes 8 problems.



Problem Set NC2: Balancing Nuclear Equations 2
Given a verbal description of a nuclear change, complete the balanced nuclear equation. Includes 8 problems.



Problem Set NC3: Fission and Fusion
To distinguish between fission and fusion reactions and to write balanced nuclear equations for each. Includes 8 problems.



Problem Set NC4: Half Life and Radioactive Decay 1
Relate the amount of an original sample of a radioisotope that remains after a specified amount of time if given the half-life of the radioisotope. Times are whole-number multiples of the half-life. Includes 6 problems.



Problem Set NC5: Half Life and Radioactive Decay 2
Relate the amount of an original sample of a radioisotope that remains after a specified amount of time if given the half-life of the radioisotope. Times are whole-number multiples of the half-life. Problems are slightly more difficulty than previous problem set. Includes 6 problems.



Problem Set NC6: Half Life and Radioactive Decay 3
Relate the amount of an original sample of a radioisotope that remains after a specified amount of time if given the half-life of the radioisotope. Times are not whole-number multiples of the half-life. Includes 6 problems.



Problem Set NC7: Radioactive Dating
Relate the age of a sample of organic matter to the decay rate in atoms/minute. Includes 5 problems.



Problem Set NC8: Mass Defect and Binding Energy
Determine the binding energy per nucleon for a variety of nuclei. Includes 4 multi-step problems.
