Physics Classroom is making strides to make our site accessible to everyone. Our site contains 6 navigation areas. The Primary, Secondary, and Page Level navigations have a screen reader version of their nav structure that allows using the left and right keys to navigate sibling navigation items, and up or down keys to navigate parent or child navigation items. The others can be navigated using tabs. The Primary Navigation handles the first 2 levels of site pages. The Secondary (which is not always available) handles the 3rd and 4th level of structure. The Page level navigation allows you to navigate the current page's headings quickly. The Header Navigation contains the Light/Dark Mode toggle, Search, Notifications and account login. The Breadcrumb Navigation contains the breadcrumb of the current page. If the current page has a breadcrumb, you can get to it by skipping to the content and tabbing in reverse (shift plus tab). The Footer Navigation contains links such as Privacy, Contact, about and terms. Some resources contain an Audio Player that can be activated by holding down the T key for 3 seconds, and then using K to pause and resume. While not every area of Physics Classroom is usable purely from keyboard and screen reader, we are committed to continue work on making this possible. If you have questions or need additional help, please use this link to contact us.

Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids - Directions

Using the Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids Concept Builder is quite simple. There are three different activities; each works a little differently. In the first activity - Properties - you will be given a statement about an unknown element that describe its properties. From the statement, you must determine if the element is a metal, a nonmetal, or a metalloid. You select your answer by tapping on one of the three buttons below the statement. Tapping once selects it; its color changes and the border appears bold and red. If you change your mind, you can tap on the button a second time to deselect it or tap on another choice. As long as you have selected an answer, a Check Answer button will appear. When you are satisfied with your choice of an answer, tap on the Check Answer button. Your answer will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.

In the second activity - Triple Play - you are presented with the names and symbols of three different elements. One of them is a metal, one is a nonmetal, and one is a metalloid. You have to determine which is which. You identify your answers by tapping on any of the fields marked Tap Me at the end of the three sentences. Tapping on these fields allows you to toggle between the three different answer options - Metal, Nonmetal, or Metalloid. You have to complete each of the three sentences by tapping on the three fields. As long as you have a unique answer for each of the three sentences, a Check Answer button will appear. When you are satisfied with your choice of an answer, tap on the Check Answer button. Your answer will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.

The third activity - Location, Location, Location - presents you with the names and symbols of eight different elements. You have to determine which of the elements are metals (or nonmetals) (or metalloids). You have to select all that apply. You select your answers by tapping on the element's name or by tapping on the radio button displayed to the right of the element's name. Tapping once selects that element as one of the answer options. You will know its selected because the text turns red and the radio button displays a red center. If you change your mind, you will have to tap a second time to deselect that element. As long as at least one element is selected, a Check Answer button will appear. You can continue selecting other elements until you have selected all that apply. When you are finally satisfied with your choice of answers, tap on the Check Answer button. Your answers will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.

In the second and the third activity, a View Periodic Table button is included. Tapping on this button slides in a Periodic Table with atomic numbers and symbols. Tapping on a table cell displays the element name. When you are done viewing the table, tap on the Close button and it will slide off the screen. You will need to have some sort of table to complete this Concept Builder. So either use the one that is included or use one of your own.

Your goal is to earn "Stars" and to complete one or more activities. Stars are earned when you show success on a particular question. Once you show success on all the questions for a particular activity, you will earn the Trophy for that activity.
