Line Spectra - Directions
Using the Line Spectra Concept Builder is quite simple. There are three activities. Each activity has its own unique set of tasks to complete. In the first activity - Paragraph Completion - you are given a paragraph with seven blanks. You must fill in the blank with the appropriate word or phrase. The blanks have a grey background and the words Tap Me! displayed in red. Tapping on the grey blank will toggel through answer options. Once the last option is displayed, an additional tap recycles back to the first option. Continue tapping until your preferred phrase is displayed. Once you have selected answers for all seven blanks, a Check Answer button is displayed. Tapping on Check Answer will check all your selected options. You will be told the number of correct answers but not which are correct. You will need to make changes and continue checking until you have correctly completed the paragraph. There is no penalty for excessive attempts (other than the time it takes to make excessive attempts).
The second activity - Line Identification - is quite different. There are three total Question Groups. Each question presents three values of either wavelength, frequency or energy for a line on an emission spectrum. You are also told the color of the lines but not told which value goes with which color. You must make that decision based on the relative size of the values. You can select the colors by tapping on the interactive field with the words Tap Me! Tapping will toggle through the three colors in order. Use this functionality to set the color associated with each of the values. Once all three colors have been chosen, a Check Answer button will appear. If you are satisfied with your choice of answers, tap on the Check Answer button. Your answers will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.
The third activity - Match That Color - is quite different than the other two. A scaled energy level diagram for an element is displayed. You are told the line spectrum for the element has three lines; the color of those lines is given. And you are told that the lines result from three different electron transitions between energy states. You must match the line color to the specific transition. A fourth question asks you to identify whether a non-visible transition results in infrared or ultraviolet light emission. Once you have committed to an answer for all four questions, a Check Answer button appears. If you are satisfied with your choice of answers, tap on the Check Answer button. Your answers will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.
Your goal is to earn "Stars" and to complete one or more activities. Stars are earned when you show success on a particular question. If you miss a question then you will have to answer two similar questions correctly before earning a star. Once you show success on all the questions for a particular activity, you will earn the trophy for that activity.
