Mission AB5 The Self-Ionization of Water

Mission AB5 pertains to water's tendency to undergo self-ionization. Students must be familiar with the terms amphiprotic, hydronium ion, hydroxide ion, ion product constant, and the mathematical relationship between Kw and the ion concentrations. No calculations are involved. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.

Learning Outcomes

  • The student should be able to explain the self-ionization of water, represent it by a chemical equation, and use the Kw value (ion product constant) to describe its equilibrium.
  • The student should be able to identify and describe a hydronium ion and a hydroxide ion and explain their concentration interdependence in aqueous solutions.
