Mission AB9 Dissociation Constants

Mission AB9 pertains to the meaning of an acid or base dissociation constant. Students must be able to recognize the relationship between a $\descriptive{K}{K,equilibrium constant}$ value and equilibrium concentrations and relate the $\descriptive{K}{K,equilibrium constant}$ value to the strength of the acid or base and the extent of its dissociation. The mission consists of 28 questions organized into 7 Question Groups.

Learning Outcomes

  • The student should be able to write \(\descriptive{K}{K,equilibrium constant}_a\) and \(\descriptive{K}{K,equilibrium constant}_b\) expressions for the dissociation of weak acids and bases in aqueous solutions.
  • The student should be able to compare the relative degree of dissociation and relative strength of two acids (or two bases) when given their \(\descriptive{K}{K,equilibrium constant}_a\) values (or \(\descriptive{K}{K,equilibrium constant}_b\) values).
